How have I never read Otherland? I read Tailchaser's Song at least four times.

I'm in the age group that grew up on War Games. Would be interested in your opinion on Ready Player One.

I’ve never read any other Tad after Otherland for fear that it wouldn’t be as good, but I probably should. Tailchaser’s Song sounds up my street.

War Games is a superb movie, although I’m guessing that the wave of laughter in the cinema when he says the “I’ll be the Russians” line was perhaps not repeated Stateside.

I loved Ready Player One but can’t remember much about it now. I’ve heard the book is way better. It’s there on one of the bookshelves and its on the “to read” list - but it’s a loooong list!

We reacted to the Russians line much like Jennifer does in the movie: "Yeah!" Being the Russians was like being the Joker or Lex Luthor, a supervillain that *obviously* one would never align oneself with in real life (ahem), hence it's way more fun to play the baddie than the good guy in a game. (sigh)

RPO (the book) has an extended sequence based on War Games that I personally found very tedious. (I actually found the whole book pretty tedious.) If you ever get to it in your reading stack, let me know!

Great post! Some of these were new to me, but all of them were intriguing (and I never knew Shaun of the Dead was about gamers - I'll have to actually sit down and watch that trilogy sometime; so many people keep mentioning it).

Wargames was a fun movie, but when I watched it I think I was more astonished at the bread-buttering scene than the computer graphics, although those were cool, too.

I enjoyed reading your write-up!
